Launching the Jack SchumacherThe San Diego Crew Classic came, went, and left the USC Men’s Crew with a clear understanding of what it will take to get a top ranking at ACRA National Championships in late May. With typically over 5,000 spectators and 3,000 competitors, it was a beautiful weekend for a regatta in Mission Bay, CA. The Varsity Eight (cox: Myles Gutenkunst, stroke: Trent Oliver, Harrison Taylor, Kellen Proctor, Ryan Hasvold, Collin Evans, Buck Scalese, Steven Kent, bow: Jeff Nelson) drew the middle lane for the first race of the day, the Cal Cup at 7:30am on Saturday against an unknown Trinity boat in lane one, LMU in lane two, a fast Notre Dame in lane four, and UCLA in lane five. Spring break is the quintessential time for relaxation, coupled with week-long mayhem for college students worldwide. But for the USC Men’s Crew, this was a week of testing endurance, stretching limits, and maintaining an edge over the competition. CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing ChampionshipComing from Southern California, there is a certain magic to touching down in a city lightly dusted by the winter snow. The adventure began when Ryan Hasvold, Trent Oliver, Kellen Proctor, Michaels Hintlian and Hill, and the coaching staff were transplanted from their training grounds in Los Angeles to Boston. Their purpose: compete at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. World Indoor Championships. The event draws its attendance from premier athletes the world over. Delegations from Germany, Estonia, Denmark, Italy, and many more came out to compete against each other and America’s best. Everyone converged in Boston to see who can row 2,000 meters the fastest. The winner of every event wins a hammer, denoting the legs of steel one must have to punch out such a mentally and physically demanding piece. Read more »
