Preseason Highlights:
The Trojan Navy’s varsity and novice squads successfully scrimmaged UC Irvine and Santa Clara University prior to the San Diego Crew Classic. Both squads also scrimmaged boathouse stable mate, Loyola Marymount University, during the winter with LMU’s varsity showing a stronger performance against the varsity crew while USC’s novice squad were better prepared against LMU. The entire squad spent spring break training at Lexington Reservoir, Los Gatos, with oarsmen & coxswains billeted out to local parents of the crew. The Trojan Navy opened its official race season at the San Diego Crew Classic with the varsity finishing an historic best-ever 3rd place in the California Cup event. The Novice squad finished 11th and 17th out of 23 crews in the novice category.

Henley Royal Regatta:
The Trojan Navy received $30,000 from the Hon. Robert Hanson or London, England to return the varsity crew to England’s Henley Royal Regatta this summer. While visiting Los Angeles for the Academy Awards this spring, the crew went to lunch with Mr. Hanson at the California Club, hosted by USC Trustee Ann Hill and crew alum Charles Lande.

Fundraising:
The program’s cash flow statement improved greatly during the quarter with revenue from gifts and student dues growing from $135,285.00 on the year in January to $196,321.00 by April 3, representing an increase of $61,036.

Equipment Purchases:
Equipment purchases have been placed on hold until the Trojan Fleet has moved to Wilmington and costs associated with the move have been met. Current equipment has maintenance needs are estimated at $4,500.

Boathouse Status:
The current boathouse lease agreement with Loyola Marymount University boathouse in Marina del Rey expires in June. The Crew Board is making preliminary arrangements to move the Men’s Crew equipment, including boats & oars & coach boats to the USC women’s boathouse in Wilmington.
No space is available inside the women’s boathouse and a temporary shelter for the fleet must be built on the east side of the facility. The Crew Board is anticipating the following costs associated with the move:
Concrete floor Slab $3,000
Temporary Shelter $3,500
Temporary Racks $1,200
Floating Dock $20,000
Dock Ramp $3,000
Dock Pylon $5,000
Total Costs: $35,000

Staff Issues:
Given the costs associated the moving the fleet to Wilmington, the Crew Board now faces the probability of not raising an additional $53,000 needed by June 30, in order for USC to offer the head coach university fringe benefits, such as health insurance.

Alumni News:
The Crew Board recognized the passing of long time crew friend and supporter, Andrew Westhem ‘54 in early March.
