Los Angeles, CA: In 1999 the USC Men’s Crew was
re-established and shortly afterward another big part of USC Crew tradition
also returned, the Shell & Oar Society.
“The Shell & Oar Society is a group of women who support the
Crew on and off the water,” informs varsity coxswain Emily
Chin ‘07. “These women cheer the team at regattas
and throw fabulous parties to celebrate victories and battles well fought.”
Emily has continued the tradition of female varsity coxswains before
her by heading up the Shell & Oar Society. Laura Foster
’03 took the initiative to formalize the group in order
to receive official recognition from the University in 2002. Jen
Passanisi ’05 was president of Shell & Oar in 2003-04.
“To start the 2004-05 season, we are planning a ‘Kick-off’
barbeque for the team to meet Society members in October. We will also
be presenting the new recruits with their Betting Shirt on this occasion,”
said Emily.
Almost forty female students signed up for the Shell & Oar Society
at the Activities Fair on campus in August. Working alongside Emily
on the organizing committee is sophomore Emily Hill ‘07,
daughter of USC Trustee and immediate past President of the USC Alumni
Association, Ann Hill. Both Emily’s accompanied
the Crew to England this past summer to cheer on the Trojans at the
Henley Royal Regatta and are experienced in hosting marquis social events.
Other events the Shell & Oar is planning include a formal Holiday
Party on Saturday, December 11, a trip to the San Diego Crew Classic
to support the Crew next April, and an end of season evening banquet
for the Crew, parents and alumni and friends in May 2005.
Crew Vice-Captain William Morris ‘07 says the
oarsmen are truly appreciative of the efforts by USC’s female
student body to support the team. “Emily should be commended for
continuing the traditions of the Shell & Oar Society,” said
William. “Our boat speed can only benefit from it.”
