Los Angeles, CA: The University of Southern California will host the 2004 National Collegiate Club Rowing Championships in the Port of Los Angeles on November 6, 2004 Trojan coach Gene Kininmonth has announced.

The race will be three miles: all crews will start at the same time, lined up alongside each other.

Club rowing teams from universities across the United States are invited to participate by entering eight-man crews. Only one crew may represent each university. There are no entry fees for this championship race.

The cost of the regatta has been underwritten by a gift to USC by the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation. The late Ken Norris was a prominent member of USC Crew in the early 1950s.

“This race provides a opportunity previously unavailable to club programs struggling for recognition,” said Coach Kininmonth. “It is a chance for clubs to compete for a national championship on an even playing field for the first time.”

Adding to the race’s attraction, visiting crews can then race the following day at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival (NARF) in Newport Beach, CA. USC will pay entry fees to NARF for all Crews that compete at the Club Nationals and provide shells for teams visiting from the east coast.

According to Coach Gene Kininmonth the Port of Los Angeles offers some of the best water to row on in the world. “The port is extremely well protected from wind. It is also quite wide making it ideal for boat racing with large numbers of crews. Click on the following link for an aerial view of the port http://www.portoflosangeles.org/aerial.htm .
