Norris Foundation Gifts $15,000
Crew Donation Dedicated in Memory of the late USC Oarsman George Gordon ‘50

George Gordon gave over 50 years of service to rowing at USC, first as an oarsman and afterward as an alumnus. His mother purchased the first set of oars for the program and now, to in honor his life of commitment to USC, the Norris Foundation has donated $15,000 to the Trojan Navy in his memory.

“We are so grateful to Ron Barnes and Harlene Norris for honoring George like this,” said Jack Schumacher ‘54.

Daughter Donates $10,000 to Honor Memory of Man who Endowed Crew at Troy

The Trojan Navy has received a gift of stock valued at $10,000 from Nansanna Wakeman, daughter of the late Lloyd Hunt. Mrs. Wakeman has requested the gift be accepted ‘in memory of my father, who along with Coach Bob Hillen, did so much for men’s rowing at USC.”

“When men’s crew was cut it just broke my father’s heart,” said Mrs. Wakeman. “I am so pleased to see so many people now supporting the crew today just as my father did.”

George Gordon ‘50 passed away suddenly in early September after suffering a heart attack. He was 74 years of age.

“George rowed on our first crews and was very active in the alumni organization,” said Jack Schumacher ‘54. “Over the years George and his close friend Kenneth Norris were among the biggest supporters of our men’s crew.”

“He will be sorely missed by everyone connected with USC, most particularly the men’s crew alumni,” said Schumacher.

Born May 22, 1928, Mr. Gordon rowed on the first men’s varsity crew in the spring of 1949 and then again in 1950, the year he graduated. His mother, Mrs. Harriet Gordon, purchased the first set of oars for the team. Until his death Mr Gordon served as a trustee of the Norris Foundation, which has continued to support the men’s crew financially over the years.
