Crew to Commission Silver Cups for Spring Races

Trophies will Honor Coach Bob Hillen & George Gordon

Chairman of the Trojan Navy, Jack Schumacher ‘54, has ordered the commissioning of two silver cups as perpetual trophies for up-coming spring boat races.

The cups will be named to honor the contributions to men’s rowing at USC by Coach Bob Hillen and the late George Gordon ‘50.

“The George Gordon Cup will be awarded to the winning varsity eight at the Trojan Navy Invitational regatta each year,” said Schumacher. “George made a lifetime contribution to USC Crew as an oarsman and then an alumnus. He persuaded his mother to purchase the first ever set of oars for the team and then helped the team secure much needed funding through the Norris Foundation when we needed it most” said Schumacher. USC will invite different universities to race for the Gordon Cup each year.

“This year’s cup-race will take place on April 13 and will be challenged for by Loyola Marymount and UCSB,” he said. The Coach Hillen Cup is being commissioned for USC’s race against cross-town rival UCLA on May 3. “Prior to coming to Troy, Bob Hillen coached at UCLA so this trophy will hold special meaning for both schools,” Schumacher said.
