Fourth Quarter Highlights:
Despite not having a boathouse the Trojan Navy maintained record numbers
through to the end of the spring semester. At the PAC-10 Championships
the men’s program won a bronze medal in the varsity fours event,
which represents only the second medal the USC Men have ever won at
a PAC-10 Championship. The first medal was also bronze, won in the varsity
fours event in 2004. The USC Men were the top club program at PAC-10s
and finished in fifth place overall. Seniors Alan Thesenvitz and JC
MacMillan represented USC in the pairs event at the IRA National Regatta
and finished 9th overall.
Crew Banquet:
Almost 140 guests attended this year’s Crew Banquet at Ports O’
Call restaurant on May 9. The evening was considered a great success
and a fitting farewell to the Trojan Navy’s seven seniors who
graduated the following day.
Student Elections:
Students voted for team captain for 2007-08 in the final week of the
season. Results were announced at the Crew Banquet and incumbent captain
Adam Fish was re-elected with overwhelming support from his peers.
Fundraising:
The Trojan Navy enjoyed another record year of fundraising. As of July
1, funds from alumni support and student dues amounted to $401,954 from
187 individual gifts. This figure compares to $220,000 raised as of
the same time last year.
Financials
2006-2007:
$ 18,963 2005-06 Carry-forward
$307,884 Annual Gifts received
$ 75,000 ’07 Pledges to be received
$ 6,500 Senate grant
$ 5,450 Banquet receipts
$ 19,070 Student Dues
$432,867 2007 Available Budget
Budget:
As a club sport Men’s Crew does not receive University funding
and must restrict spending to funds raised from student dues and alumni/parent
support. The Crew has run a minimal net surplus in each of the last
five years in the range of $10,000 to $20,000. The Crew Board will enjoy
a net surplus in the 2007 fiscal year of over $150,000, with funds raised
in advance for 2008 salaries and equipment commitments. The Crew Board
does not adhere to a strict budget but rather establishes spending priorities
based on current and seasonal needs as funds permit.
Leading priorities include equipment maintenance, uniforms, coaches’
salaries, local travel for competition and communications (website/newsletter/marketing
pieces). Decisions regarding new equipment purchases (such as boats)
or overseas travel are made when donors of large gifts designate funds
for such purpose.
Staff Issues:
At the year-end meeting, the Crew Board discussed plans to bring on
a third rowing coach in August to assist with the growing program. The
men’s program is expected to boat over 65 rowers and coxswains
in the fall semester.
Equipment Purchases:
The Crew ordered three new two-man shells for the team during the fourth
quarter. The program currently has one pair and three more will allow
the varsity crew to break up into small boats to race each other. The
new shells are scheduled to be delivered in August. A third launch will
be purchased in the new fiscal year to accommodate the third coach for
approximately $10,000.

Port of Los Angeles
Boathouse Report:
Construction of the new boathouse in the Port of Los Angeles has been
delayed while the University negotiates a new long-term lease arrangement
with port officials. With concerns of delays in the process, the men’s
crew is making conceptual plans to pave the area where the shells are
stored and provide shelter for the boats from the sun. These plans include
landscaping and installing more racks along the fence line to accommodate
new shells. The project is expected to cost around $25-$30,000.
PAC-10 News:
At the June 11 PAC-10 Conference Council meeting the following actions
were taken that pertain to rowing.
1. Men’s entries to the PAC-10 Rowing Championships in 2008 will
be limited to PAC-10 institutions only. Non PAC-10 institutions will
still be permitted to enter women’s events as it is seen as a
NCAA Championship qualifying regatta.
2. The 2008 PAC-10 Rowing Championships will be a two-day regatta.
3. PAC-10 Head Coaches will meet in the Bay Area in October to discuss
PAC-10 rowing issues.
4. The PAC-10 Conference will sponsor a ‘Rower of the Year’
award for men’s and women’s rowing. Each award is expected
to be named after a past PAC-10 rower or coach who has had an historic
impact on the sport.
USC will recommend to the PAC-10 that the men’s award be named
in honor of former USC Oarsman Conn Findlay, who represented the United
States at four Olympic Games; winning gold medals in 1956, 1964 and
bronze in 1964 and 1976. Mr. Findlay also served as the head coach for
men’s rowing at Stanford University for a number of years and
was inducted into Stanford’s Hall of Fame in 2005.
