Varsity
and Novice Eights Dominate at Long Beach Spring Regatta
Long Beach, CA – March 18, 2007 – The Trojan Navy earned
victories in the men’s varsity and novice eight events over crews
from Long Beach State, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and the University
of San Diego to open its spring season at the Long Beach Spring Regatta
on Sunday.
The victories followed a grueling weeklong spring break training camp
in Los Gatos.

Forty-two oarsmen and coxswains comprised the Trojan Navy travel squad
that returned to picturesque Lexington Reservoir in Northern California.
While in Los Gatos the Trojans rowed up to 40 kilometers a day and scrimmaged
host Santa Clara University and Los Gatos Rowing Club.

“Santa Clara is a rapidly emerging collegiate rowing program under
Coach Vislav Kudja’s guidance,” said Trojan Coach Gene Kininmonth.
“The Broncos provided plenty of competition over the week to keep
us honest and we were grateful to be their guests in Los Gatos.”
On Sunday the Trojans showed no sign of fatigue in Long Beach. The Varsity
Crew opened the morning with an easy win over Long Beach State and the
Los Angeles Rowing Club in the first round and proceeded to the Final
where they enjoyed an open water victory over the University of San
Diego, Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount. UC Irvine finished third
in the first round and did not qualify for the Final.
Despite mild illness in the crew, USC also dispatched the competition
with ease in the Men’s Novice Eights event. USC entered two eights
in the event and finished first and fourth against Long Beach State
and University San Diego.
The Trojan Novice Eight of cox Drew Moxom, stroke Collin Evans, Ryan
Hasvold, Ryan Moore, Mike Boosalis, Ryan Selan, Paul Van Dyk, Peter
Mattarese and bowman Mark Martinez sprinted to a boat length lead in
the first twenty strokes and won the event unchallenged by the finish
line. The second Trojan Crew of cox Mellisa Choi, stroke Paul Giuliano,
Kevin Chin, Daniel Camin, Buck Scalese, Jeffrey Cohen, Charles Smith,
Banhu Shandilya and bowman Erik Loos got off to a disappointing start
in the race but charged home to finish just feet behind the University
of San Diego.
The final 2000m race of the day for the Trojans was the JV Eights event,
where USC finished in third place in the final behind USD and Loyola
Marymount University. “Two weeks ago our JV crew would likely
have won this event,” said varsity coach Joe Richards. “This
crew has recently been hit hard by injuries but we expect to see them
rebound by the San Diego Crew Classic as oarsmen return from the injured
list.”
