USC dethroned by UC Davis in close finish in Open Eights event.
November 6, 2005 -Newport Beach, CA – In a double-header
weekend of boat racing, USC was dethroned as title holder of the Men’s
Open 8 event by UC Davis at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday.
The loss was the Trojans first for the Fall and came on the heels of
a significant USC victory at the National Collegiate Rowing Championships
in the Port of Los Angeles just the day before.
The Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, a time trial race from Lido Island
to Newport Aquatic Center in the Back Bay of Newport Harbor, is the
West Coast’s largest rowing event of the Fall.
USC took line honors in the Open Eights event but lost to Davis on adjusted
time.
After wins at the San Diego Row for the Cure and Head of the Marina,
the USC Novice squad also experienced their first defeat in Newport
Beach, finishing 7th and 14th out of 22 crews.
