Regatta Schedule Set for Club Nationals

When the Trojan Navy opens a new season at the National Collegiate Club Rowing Championships in the Port of Los Angeles on November 11, the program will be bolstered with the addition of a men’s lightweight rowing crew.

Eight ‘walk-on’ rowers weighing an average 160lbs will race UC Berkeley in the Men’s Collegiate Novice Lightweight Eight category of sub-varsity competition to open the regatta at 10:00 a.m.

The Trojan Navy has three coxswains and twenty-seven rowers on its novice squad this year and ten of these rowers are lightweights. Novice rowers are first-year rowers and lightweights must weigh less than 165 lbs with crew averages capped at 160 lbs to compete in the Fall semester.

“Until now we have been mixed in with the heavyweights on a daily basis but we are looking forward to forming our own crew the week prior to the opening race,” says freshman Peter Mataresse.

Head Coach Gene Kininmonth added the lightweights to this year’s team to increase the number of opportunities for USC students to participate in the sport. “Having the lightweight crew has also helped to build depth on the team. In collegiate rowing a person can develop athletically quite dramatically from one year to the next. Someone who is a lightweight this year can turn into quite a decent heavyweight oarsman next year.”
