HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA DIARIES: Part I
June 25, 2010
By Head Coach, Danny Johnson
Our boys just qualified to race at the Henley Royal Regatta. To become “qualified” they had to beat out 47 crews for the coveted 14 remaining spots for the Temple Challenge. Traditionally, The Temple Challenge cup at Henley sees the top 32 clubs and Universities of the world. This year, eighteen boats received an automatic bid for the race based their historical representation and their relative performances this season. Read more »
The 2009-2010 competitive season for the Trojan Navy ended with a flurry. Or, given the inclement weather at their final race, “whirlwind” is more appropriate. Following a decisive 14-second victory over UCLA on May 8, the USC Men’s Crew headed off for our grueling schedule of championship races: both the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (May 15) and PAC-10 Championships (May 16) in Sacramento, CA and the ACRA Club National Championships (May 22-23) in Oklahoma City, OK. Almost a second home, the waters of Newport offer an uncanny degree of comfort to the Trojan Navy. Having spent their Spring Break training there, every oarsman on the crew is aware of how clean and fresh the air and water are, especially in comparison to our home at the Port. Everything about Newport is beautiful: the houses, the yachts, and the locals, who were extremely friendly towards the crew during Spring Break; but this is a story in and of itself (ask a rower about their experiences during break) Set in this gorgeous environment is one of the most prestigious races on the West Coast: the Newport Regatta. Hosted by OCC, the regatta is a showcase of the speed of Southern California rowing, and an event the Coast Crew has historically dominated. Coach Danny Johnson said of the event: “There is something to be said about Southern California rowing. Read more »
Spring is upon us and with that comes the annual Newport Regatta in beautiful Newport Beach on Sunday, April 11!
This is our premier Orange County rowing event for the Spring which will pit USC versus our local rivals — UCLA, UCSD, USD, UCI and Orange Coast College.
We would like to make a special invitation to all Young Alums from the 90′s and 2000′s to come out and support the Crew in what will be some of our most competitive racing of the year! This is the 10th Anniversary of the re-founding of the USC Men’s Crew program after our hiatus in the 90′s. Since then, hundreds of Trojans have matriculated through the Crew, representing a new era in our long history at USC and we would love to see you all. Read more »
The San Diego Crew Classic came, went, and left the USC Men’s Crew with a clear understanding of what it will take to get a top ranking at ACRA National Championships in late May. With typically over 5,000 spectators and 3,000 competitors, it was a beautiful weekend for a regatta in Mission Bay, CA. The Varsity Eight (cox: Myles Gutenkunst, stroke: Trent Oliver, Harrison Taylor, Kellen Proctor, Ryan Hasvold, Collin Evans, Buck Scalese, Steven Kent, bow: Jeff Nelson) drew the middle lane for the first race of the day, the Cal Cup at 7:30am on Saturday against an unknown Trinity boat in lane one, LMU in lane two, a fast Notre Dame in lane four, and UCLA in lane five. What turned out to be the fastest heat of the morning had Notre Dame and Trinity advancing to the Grand Finals, with LMU and USC to race in the Petite Final. UCLA finished 11.1 seconds behind the USC Varsity and did not advance to a second race. Read more »

Spring break is the quintessential time for relaxation, coupled with week-long mayhem for college students worldwide. But for the USC Men’s Crew, this was a week of testing endurance, stretching limits, and maintaining an edge over the competition. During the week of March 14th-20th, the rowers traveled to Newport Beach, CA, where they pushed through seven days of grueling workouts that tested them physically and mentally. Thankfully, the team was able to raise enough money during the Nike online gear sale to stay comfortably close the training grounds at a local Best Western. The accommodations were appreciated and were vital to the overall success of the intense experience. Read more »
